The STEMS RU, in a broader sense and in collaboration with other colleagues, deals with a range of topics, some of which are:

An example list of equipment available at STEMS follows:
- 3 MW fluidized bed combustor
- 50 kW fluidized bed gasifier
- Compartmented deep pseudo two-dimensional fluidized bed (1.2 cubic meters)
- Megaris bubbling fluidized beds combustor
- Directly irradiated fluidized bed reactor equipped with both a conventional thermal heating systems full power of 5 kW, and a concentrated solar simulator that irradiates the upper fluidized bed surface with a peak flux of 3 MW m−2 and a total power of 3 kWth.
- STR cylindrical steel reactor, 5 L, 400 bar and 350°C ATEX/PED certified
- 4 L tubular steel PFR reactor, 400 bar and 350°C ATEX/PED certified
